Most other Teachers are on tier 2, qualifying for residency after just two years. Frequently Asked Questions

How much will I get paid?

Teacher salaries in New Zealand vary based on qualifications, experience, and additional roles, such as senior management positions.  From December 2024, starting salaries are NZD61,329, rising up to NZD103,086 with relevant experience and qualifications.  Teachers at the highest pay level for 3 years might qualify for an extra NZD2,000 annually. Leadership roles offer extra pay of NZD5,000 per annum.

What are the expected working hours, specifically for class contact time?

Full time teachers typically work a 40-hour week.  Class contact time (actual teaching) is usually around 20 hours per week.  Timetabled non-contact hours (planning and preparation) amount to 5 hours a week.

What are the term dates and holiday periods?

The New Zealand school year is divided into 4 terms:

Term 1: Late January/early February to mid-April

Term 2: Late April to early July

Term 3: Mid-July to late September

Term 4: Mid-October to mid-December

Each term is approximately 10 weeks long, with 2-week breaks between terms and a 6-week summer break at the end of the year.

How frequently will I receive my salary?

Salaries are paid every 2 weeks by Education Payroll on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

Do I need registration as well as qualifications assessed?

Yes, you need to have your qualifications assessed by NZQA and be registered with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. A teaching degree (e.g. BEd or Graduate Diploma in Teaching) is required.

Do schools provide professional development?

There are different types of professional development offered:

    • In-School training:  workshops and seminars, regular team meetings
    • External courses and conferences:  specialised training or educational conferences
    • Mentoring and Coaching: support from experienced teachers
    • Professional Learning Communities: collaborative learning with other teachers in and out of school
    • Funding or subsidies: financial support for further qualifications
    • Teacher-only days: 2 days a year dedicated to professional development.
What is NCEA?

National Certificate of Educational Achievement is New Zealand’s qualification for secondary students in Years 11-13.  Each level requires 80 credits earned through assessments and exams. Students can achieve endorsements for high performance in individual subjects or overall.
